The Story of NKOTB: From Boston to Global Domination

The story of New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) is the blueprint for the modern boyband era. Assembled in Boston in 1984 by producer Maurice Starr, the group was intended to be a white counterpart to Starr’s previous success, New Edition. The lineup began with Donnie Wahlberg, who helped recruit his younger brother Mark (who left early to become Marky Mark), lifelong friend Danny Wood, and schoolmates Jordan and Jonathan Knight. The final piece of the puzzle was 12-year-old Joey McIntyre, who replaced Jamie Kelly just as the group began their journey.

Their self-titled debut in 1986 was largely ignored, but the 1988 follow-up, Hangin' Tough, changed music history. Fusing pop melodies with an R&B "street" image, NKOTB exploded into a global phenomenon. Hits like "You Got It (The Right Stuff)," "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)," and the anthemic "Hangin' Tough" turned the five teenagers into the biggest stars on the planet. By the time they released Step by Step in 1990, the "Blockhead" fanbase was millions strong, making them the first boyband to sell out stadiums and dominate the merchandising market.

Exhaustion and shifting musical trends led to a split in 1994 following the release of the more mature, R&B-leaning Face the Music. For 14 years, the members pursued solo careers in music, acting, and real estate. However, in 2008, they reunited for The Block, reclaiming their place in pop culture. Since then, NKOTB has remained a permanent fixture in the industry, touring with other legends like Backstreet Boys (as NKOTBSB) and Boyz II Men. In 2024, they released their first full studio album in over a decade, Still Kids, proving that the boys from Boston are still the kings of the right stuff.

One of the biggest boybands in the late 80s and early 90s, New Kids On The Block made a come-back in 2008.
