a1 is a multi-award-winning English-Norwegian pop group that took the music world by storm upon their formation in 1998. The line-up consists of Ben Adams, Christian Ingebrigtsen, Mark Read, and original member Paul Marazzi, who famously returned to the group for their 20th-anniversary celebrations. While Ingebrigtsen hails from Oslo, Norway, the rest of the band originated from the United Kingdom, creating a unique cross-cultural pop dynamic.
Their ascent was rapid; debut single "Be the First to Believe" shot straight into the UK Top 10 in 1999. Over the following years, they became a global phenomenon, particularly in the UK, South East Asia, and Japan. With two UK Number 1 singles ("Take On Me" and "Same Old Brand New You") and eight Top 10 hits under their belt, they solidified their status as world-class songwriters, winning the BRIT Award for British Breakthrough Act in 2001.
After a hiatus that began in 2002 following Marazzi's departure, the group reformed as a trio in 2009, releasing critically acclaimed albums like Waiting for Daylight and Rediscovered. Their evolution from teen idols to respected musicians was evident as they explored a more mature, organic pop sound while maintaining the soaring harmonies that made them famous.
