The Full Story of JLS
The story of JLS (Jack the Lad Swing) is one of the most successful "loser wins" tales in reality TV history. Formed in 2007 by Oritsé Williams, the group was built on a foundation of classic R&B influences like Boyz II Men and Jodeci. Oritsé first recruited Marvin Humes, who brought professional experience from his time in the band VS, followed by Aston Merrygold and JB Gill. Originally performing under the name UFO (Unique Famous Outrageous), they spent a year building a reputation in London's underground clubs before auditioning for the fifth series of The X Factor UK in 2008.
Their impact on the show was immediate. Mentored by Louis Walsh, JLS became a household name overnight, largely thanks to their flawless vocal harmonies and Aston’s signature backflips. They reached the grand final, ultimately finishing as runners-up to Alexandra Burke. However, the "JLS Mania" that had gripped the country was undeniable. They signed a record deal with Epic Records and released their debut single, "Beat Again," in July 2009. The track went straight to Number 1, winning them the 2010 BRIT Award for British Single.
The following years saw JLS dominate the British pop landscape. They became cultural icons, represented by their signature individual colors (Blue, Green, Yellow, and Red) and selling everything from hoodies to their own line of condoms and perfumes. With five Number 1 singles and over 10 million records sold, they redefined the modern British boyband. However, in 2013, the group decided to go out on a high note, releasing a greatest hits album and embarking on a massive farewell tour that left fans devastated.
After seven years of successful solo ventures in TV presenting, West End theatre, and farming, the bond between the four friends brought them back together. In 2020, they announced a massive reunion tour. Despite being delayed by the pandemic, their comeback was a triumphant success, resulting in the 2021 studio album 2.0 and several sold-out arena tours. Today, JLS continues to be a staple of British pop, proving that their R&B-infused sound and brotherly chemistry are truly timeless.
