The Story of East 17
East 17 emerged in 1991 as the gritty, "bad boy" alternative to the clean-cut pop of Take That. Named after the E17 postcode of their native Walthamstow in London, the group—originally consisting of songwriter Tony Mortimer, lead singer Brian Harvey, John Hendy, and Terry Coldwell—brought a fusion of R&B, hip-hop, and pop that resonated with a more "street" audience. While Take That dominated the teen magazines, East 17 dominated the charts with a raw energy and self-penned hits that gave them a unique edge in the boyband era.
Their success was stratospheric throughout the mid-90s, achieving 18 Top 20 singles and four Top 10 albums. Their 1994 masterpiece, "Stay Another Day," became a global phenomenon, securing the coveted UK Christmas Number One spot and winning an Ivor Novello Award for Tony Mortimer. The track’s iconic white parka-clad video remains a permanent fixture of pop culture. Other massive hits like "House of Love," "It's Alright," and "Thunder" showcased their versatility, ranging from high-energy dance tracks to soulful, harmony-driven ballads.
However, the group’s journey was often as turbulent as their lyrics were catchy. In 1997, a high-profile scandal involving Brian Harvey’s controversial comments regarding drug use led to his dismissal from the group. Although Tony Mortimer left shortly after, the band attempted a comeback as a trio (E-17) and later saw various reformations involving different members. Despite the friction and multiple lineup changes over three decades, the brand of East 17 never truly faded, maintained by the dedication of the remaining members and a legacy of songwriting that was far more sophisticated than the typical boyband fare of the time.
Now in 2026, East 17 continues to tour and perform for thousands of nostalgic fans worldwide. Led by original member Terry Coldwell alongside Robbie Craig and Joe Livermore, the group remains a headline fixture at major 90s festivals across Europe and Australia. Their music continues to be discovered by a new generation on streaming platforms, proving that the boys from Walthamstow created a sound that was truly built to last.
