Beyond the Emerald Isle: The Rise and Fall of OTT
OTT (standing for Over the Top) was Ireland’s ambitious answer to the global boyband boom of the mid-90s. Formed in Dublin in 1995, the original five-piece lineup featured Niall O'Neill, Alan Fitzsimons, Alan Mates (rebranded as 'Adam' for the band), Glen Clarke, and Keith Cox. Signed to Sony Music, they were positioned as a more vocal-centric alternative to the high-energy dance groups of the era, focusing on lush harmonies and radio-ready ballads.
Their initial impact in Ireland was significant, with three consecutive Top 10 singles establishing them as homegrown heroes. However, the road to UK stardom proved more difficult. Just as they prepared to launch across the Irish Sea, Keith Cox departed the group for family reasons. Continuing as a quartet, they released their debut album, This One's For You, in 1997. While the UK response was moderate, the group found an unexpected and massive stronghold in Southeast Asia. Their debut album became a phenomenon there, moving over 250,000 copies and leading to frantic tours where they were greeted with the kind of hysteria usually reserved for Take That or Westlife.
Despite their international success, shifting priorities at their label saw them dropped by Sony in the late 90s, leading the band to call it a day in 1998. The members have since moved into various fields; notably, Alan Fitzsimons reminded the public of the group’s vocal prowess when he appeared on The Voice UK in 2012, earning a spot on Tom Jones' team. Though their time in the spotlight was brief, OTT remains a cherished part of the Irish pop explosion, remembered for their genuine talent and for taking Dublin's sound to the other side of the world.
