The Story of Code Red
Code Red is an R&B-influenced boyband from the United Kingdom formed in 1995. The group consists of Phillip Andrew Rodell, Neil James Watts, Lee John Missen, and Roger Ratajczak. They first caught the public eye when they entered the Great British Song Contest in 1996, the UK's pre-selection for Eurovision, where they finished as runners-up with the soulful ballad "I Gave You Everything."
Their breakthrough came with their debut album Scarlet, released in 1997. While they achieved respectable success in the UK charts, the group became an absolute phenomenon in Southeast Asia. Their cover of Tevin Campbell's "Can We Talk" and their original hit "This Is Our Song" propelled them to superstar status in countries like Indonesia and Malaysia, where they sold out stadiums and achieved multi-platinum sales.
Over the years the group released numerous hit songs including "Is There Someone Out There?" and "What Good Is a Heart." Their music resonated with audiences through a blend of polished R&B production and impeccable four-part vocal harmonies. They were one of the few British acts of the era to bridge the gap between pure pop and sophisticated soul, gaining respect from both teen audiences and R&B fans.
Through international tours and three studio albums, Code Red became a defining act within the global boyband movement. After the group disbanded in 2001, the members continued to work in the music industry as songwriters and producers. Phil Rodell, in particular, became a highly successful songwriter for major artists like Westlife and Sugababes.
