The Story of Big Fun
Big Fun was a British pop boyband formed in 1988, consisting of Phil Creswick, Mark Gillespie, and Jason John. The trio emerged during the golden era of the legendary production team Stock Aitken Waterman, who dominated the late 80s charts and crafted a signature sound that defined a generation of pop music.
Designed as a vibrant, youthful act, Big Fun combined polished choreography, catchy hooks, and the high-energy Hi-NRG sound that was hugely popular at the time. They were among the earliest examples of a “manufactured” boyband, helping shape the blueprint later perfected by 90s acts.
Their debut single "Blame It on the Boogie" (1989), a cover of The Jacksons’ hit, became an instant success, reaching the UK Top 5. They quickly followed this with "Can't Shake the Feeling", which climbed into the UK Top 10, proving their staying power in a highly competitive pop market.
Their debut album A Pocketful of Dreams (1989) showcased the full Stock Aitken Waterman production style—glossy, upbeat, and radio-friendly. Tracks like "Handful of Promises" and "Not That Kind" continued their run of chart success, although momentum began to slow as musical trends shifted at the dawn of the 90s.
One of their later singles, "Stomp" (1990), marked a slightly more mature sound, but it failed to replicate their earlier chart success. Shortly after, Big Fun disbanded in 1990, bringing an abrupt end to their promising career.
Tragically, member Jason John passed away in 2019 in Brazil where he had been working as the manager of the boyband P9. His death added a bittersweet note to the band’s legacy, as fans remembered the joy and energy he brought to their music and performances.
Despite their short lifespan, Big Fun remains an important part of late 80s pop culture. Their music captures the essence of the Stock Aitken Waterman era and represents an early chapter in the evolution of the modern boyband phenomenon.
