The Story of B3
B3 was a high-profile American boyband that achieved massive crossover success in Central Europe during the early 2000s. Formed in New York City in 2001, the original trio—Timothy Cruz, John Sutherland, and Rod Michael—was strategically managed to target the German-speaking market. Their debut concept was unique: their first album, First, consisted primarily of modernized Bee Gees covers, which resonated deeply with audiences in Germany and Austria.
Their breakthrough came with their cover of "I.O.I.O.", which reached Number 4 on the German charts and was certified Gold in 2002. Shortly after this success, Rod Michael departed for a solo career and was replaced by Blair Late. This new lineup transitioned from covers to original material with the release of their second album, N.Y.B3, featuring the hit "Tonight and Forever." Their ability to combine New York energy with European pop sensibilities made them staples of Bravo magazine and television countdowns.
The group released their final studio effort, Living For The Weekend, in 2004 before announcing their separation late that year. Their farewell concert in December 2004 marked the end of an era for the German pop scene. Following the split, the members pursued varied paths: John Sutherland moved into musical theater and solo music, Timothy Cruz continued acting and music projects, and Blair Late became a well-known media personality and journalist in the United States.
Now in 2026, B3 is remembered as a "cult classic" act of the post-millennium boyband boom. Their tracks remain fan favorites on 90s and 2000s nostalgia playlists across Europe, and the members occasionally interact with their dedicated fanbase via social media, celebrating the unique journey they took from the streets of New York to the top of the European charts.
